American Red Cross offers a variety of volunteer opportunities and community service programs. There’s something for all ages–so you can help out together as a family. Ask about the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, Hands Only CPR, Pillowcase project, disaster preparation and relief. Your homeschool group could write cards for Service men and Veterans. Envirothon: Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) are subdivisions of state government under the local direction of a board of elected and appointed commissioners that promote the wise use of soil and water. SC Department of Natural Resources coordinates and supports SWCDs. SWCDs provide educational workshops, classroom visits, scholarship opportunities, poster, essay, and photo contests, among other educational opportunities. One environmental education opportunity offered by SWCDs is the Envirothon which is an outdoor environmental competition for high school students to compete for scholarships.
SC Garden-based Learning Network provides teacher-training and student workshops in outdoor, nature and garden education. We utilize gardens as the context and content for instruction and learning.

Garnet Squadron Robotics is a 4-H club for high school students in the South Carolina Midlands area interested in robotics, science, and engineering. Working with mentors from the University of South Carolina, College of Engineering and Computing, we participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge, where students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. Each year, FTC teams are faced with a different challenge and must use their designing, engineering, and programming skills to build a robot to compete against teams from all over the world. Teams also raise funds via marketing and community outreach.

Midlands Archery Center offers various archery opportunities for students and adults. Available programs include the popular National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), an in-school archery program for students in grades 4 – 12 with the original homeschool team of the Midlands, the Capital City Eagles. The Suzuki Strings at USC Program began in 2010 and was renamed The Suzuki Academy of Columbia & USC in 2018. The Suzuki Academy is a community music program who uses the Suzuki Method and Philosophy to instruct children as young as three years old on the violin, viola, cello, and classical guitar. Currently the Suzuki Academy has about 110 students and instructs students through the high school years.
